
Hanks in his next role - astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - was his first time reuniting with Ron Howard. The performances in the film and Kevin Bacon's portrayal were well-received by critics. The film garnered nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks played the role of Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated film Toy Story (1995). He made his directorial debut a year later with The Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and decline of a 60s-era music group. He also took on the role of a producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and many experts agree that Hanks' performances earned him a spot among the top romantic comedy actors of in his generation.
